The Role of Hair Conditioner

Shampoo and Conditioner work as a team to care for your hair, shampoo cleanses your hair and scalp of the everyday build-up of dirt and oils, while conditioner protects and strengthens your hair. Similar to how you moisturize your skin after cleansing, you also moisturize your hair by using a conditioner. The proper conditioner can defrizz, detangle, hydrate and form a protective layer to prevent damage to the hair.

Conditioner is a moisturizing agent made up of ingredients such as oils, emollients, amino acids and other nourishing components. Since Shampoo is a cleaning agent it inevitably strips the hair and scalp of oils, which conditioner can replenish.

There are various types of conditioners too, but the most common is the conditioner meant to be used after shampoo. Other conditioners, such as leave-in conditioners, deep conditioners and hair masks will have special instructions and labels explaining how they differ. However, it's important for hair health to regularly condition your hair which is easiest with a regular after shampoo conditioner.

It's important to be critical of the ingredients in the conditioner, some may be working against you and slowly drying out your hair. Isopropyl alcohol is an over-drying ingredient often used in shampoo and conditioners. Fragrances, parabens and silicones are other common ingredients that can be drying and difficult on the skin and hair.

While it's important to look for ingredients to avoid, it can also be beneficial to look for ingredients you want in your hair products. Examples of hydrating ingredients that you want to look for are coconut oil, vitamin e, and aloe vera. These ingredients are usually derived from plant sources and full of various vitamins to nourish and hydrate your hair and scalp
